Hello! Happy Wednesday!
I registered for the Double Road Race, which is at the end of August. It features the two distances I do not like… 10K and 5K. The 10K starts at 7:30am, and the 5K at 9:15am. That means I could potentially have about 55 minutes between each race. Not sure what I’ll do then, but I’ll ask other people in the Running Addicts for advice.
Today? I wanted to do a simulation run. Run a loop in Saratoga that is 5.2 miles, take a 15 minute break, and then run 2.5 miles. I just wanted to get used to running two legs at a pace that is faster than what I’m usually comfortable with.
It kind of did not help that I woke up super sore. I did an hour-long Insanity video yesterday morning, which I have not done in a while. Though the push-up stuff was super sucky, I found that the video was actually a whole lot easier than usual. Perhaps all of those tRAck runs? Or because I took a complete rest day on Monday… or the combination of both.
Anyways, I also did 12 trail miles yesterday, so this was going to be interesting.
I started off with a nice and slow W/U of 1.5 miles. Then I started my first leg of 5.2 miles. The splits: 8:03, 8:05, 8:04, 7:44, 7:46, 7:11 (for last 0.2).
Not bad. 5.2 leg done in 41:09 (7:55 pace).
Then the 15-minute break. I didn’t know what to do, so I just walked around the track (Prospect High), did three strides, and then it was already time to go.
… but I really really didn’t want to. I was about to leave and call it a day, but I knew I would be disappointed in myself if I didn’t do the freaking 2.5 miles. So I told myself to just take it easy and get it done (that’s what I might have to do on race day).
So I set off for the 2.5 mile leg. Splits: 7:50, 8:07, 7:34 (for last 0.5).
2.5 mile leg done in 19:47 (7:54 pace).
I definitely didn’t want to go all out with these, but it was definitely faster than my comfortable pace. The route was pretty good for training for a flat race, and the weather was sunny and slightly windy on certain parts. It was all the makings for a perfect training run.
Still have to experiment with how I’m going to fuel. I was pretty much hungry for every part of the runs today because I had my breakfast a few hours before. Probably not the best decision. I’m thinking I should also have some electrolytes or GU after the first race (10K). I’ll do this kind of training/trial/simulation run again. Hoping to do it two more times before race day. Maybe for one of those trials, I’ll do the full distances!… but probably not… unless I suddenly start to like those distances. We’ll see.
Total miles for today (including W/U, runs, C/D, walks): 10.45 miles.
Something cool happened. My brother and his girlfriend are going to run 5K’s in Summer Breeze!!! It will be the first 5K’s for each of them (though Michael has done two 10K’s and a half). I’m so excited, and so are they!
^Went from looking excited to looking drunk. That was from his birthday party. Michael was just drunk on good times, I guess. 😉
