Oh, How I’ve Changed

Do you remember how much I used to talk about hating speedwork and track workouts?

Well, things have changed, and it’s all thanks to these guys:


^The Running Addicts (RA’s) are the running group that I am a member of and I have been attending every tRAck meet during the whole summer (when I am available). Well this past Thursday, I was working until 8pm 😦

… So I did something I never would have done in the past… Yesterday morning, I hit the track by myself to run the workout they did on Thursday. Unfortunately, the workout was not an easy one to complete (at least mentally).

“400’s x 12, 90 sec RI”. TIMES TWELVE HOLY MOLY. 

Luckily, I think I have gotten a wee bit mentally tougher.

Instead of thinking so much about, “Oh, noooo… I have ELEVEN more of those to do??…. Crap I’ve only done four? That means there’s still eight more!”….

… I just kept reminding myself to be in the moment and focus on the 400 that I am doing right then and there. I can worry about the other ones as I come to it (although what’s to really worry about? I just have to take it one step at a time).

Another thing I was thinking for this particular track workout was: Conserve, conserve conserve.

Maybe that’s weird that I was so focused on getting a balance between working hard and conserving, but I knew that if I went out 100% on the early ones, I would poop out and probably not finish the workout. It’s not like my running group pals are there to keep me accountable to the run.

Another glorious part? The 90 seconds of recovery. It can really do wonders and help me get going on the next 400.

So anywho, I went to Saratoga High (my high school) to get this workout done. I did an easy two miles to warm up (Oh, yeah. I also learned through the Running Addicts what a warm up is. Never really knew what my warm up pace was because… I never warmed up for anything before, hahaha).

I also did 100m strides x 4, just like we do at our tRAck workouts.

Here are the times for the 400m (0.25 mile): 1:40, 1:38, 1:37, 1:34, 1:40, 1:40, 1:39, 1:38, 1:36, 1:39, 1:38, 1:32. Don’t you just love when I throw all these numbers at you?

That last one was at a 6:09 mile pace… and it was the fastest of the bunch (which is what I was going for, I guess). Made me want to yack.

With another mile for cooldown, I completed 7.45 miles on the track and went home with a huge feeling of accomplishment.

Oh, and if it had not been for the RA’s, I never would have known I could program workouts into my Garmin 405:


^Soooo freaking cool. It beeps to let you know when you’re almost done with the 400m (so I can speed up a bit), as well as beeping a few before your next 400m (when the recovery is over). I didn’t have to think about anything. I just got to stay focused on the workout and making it around the oval.


Was supposed to go to Vegas this week, but things got changed up and will be going to TAHOE instead 😀


^I don’t think I have nearly as much muscle as I used to. Boo. Oh, well. Still not going to change the fact that I get to see the beautiful Tahoe blue 🙂

    Good for you for getting in that track work out alone, I see many more in your future!
