Things and Stuff

I missed a lot of running days because of a bunch of school work I had to get done before spring break (which is right now).

OH, WELL! Gotta keep things moving and just get back on track, yeah?

Anyways, there were some cool things that happened in the last few days. On Saturday, my family and I headed out to Half Moon Bay for picture-taking, eating seafood, and getting fancy at the Ritz Carlton. Also, Flat Stanley came along with us (my cousin’s daughter sent him from Florida and he’s here to have adventures in California!):

I got to take this picture of my dad, who is always taking pictures and never in them! Even in all the photo albums when we are little, he is usually not in them because he insists on taking the pictures of his family (I find this to be so true of so many fathers… they are always the photographers/paparazzi for the family):

Here is my grandfather and his great granddaughter, Asia (btw, he has 7 great grandchildren. They are all girls, hahaha):

Asia had so much fun with my phone, drawing pictures on it with the stylus:

My brother and his wife are in newly-wed lovie-dovie bliss! So nice to see them so happy πŸ˜€ (Asia is my other cousin’s daughter, btw):

And they got to chill with Flat Stanley (in the middle of the table):

It was so nice to be fancy-pants at the Ritz:L1010116

Moving on to this week… I have nearly full-time hours! It’s a blessing and not a blessing at the same time. I have a crap-ton of school work to do, and I don’t feel like using my brain once I get done with 8 hours of work (tutoring).

But at least Flat Stanley got to check out the work place. Here is a picture of him with an art-piece I put together:

I did an easy 6-miler on the treadmill after work on Monday (as well as 30+ minutes of yoga in the morning, before work).

Then on Tuesday morning, I decided to get my important tempo run out of the way.

3 miles warm up: 9:35, 9:17, 9:23

8 mile tempo (should be marathon race pace, around 8:00-8:05): 8:05, 7:59, 8:02, 7:58, 8:06, 7:52, 7:57, 7:53

3 miles cooldown: 9:02, 9:16, 8:56

Total: 14 miles, 1:59:XX

I brought Flat Stanley with me for the cooldown to take some pictures:

Hehe. It’s kind of weird, but I’m having lots of fun with this Flat Stanley project. My brother suggested I make him sunglasses and we both hang out at the beach and such. Things are about to start getting weird o__O

During that 14-miler, I didn’t have my running buddies or music. I just had my thoughts and my prayers. I asked God to open my eyes to something new… and he sure did!

Short thing about things and stuff. I’m talking about material possessions. For the longest time, I used to not want a smartphone because I knew I would get attached to it, and I really didn’t want to get attached to a THING. I eventually got one because my dad got one for free. Anyways…

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in them.” 1 John 2:15.

I know so many people who fall for the things of this world (including me, on and off at various times). We become sooooo attached to someTHING that when we don’t have it, we feel incomplete! We also strive for things that are so temporary… it’s one of those things where you think that if you finally have it (which could be a certain relationship, a bigger house, a new car, a “perfect” body, the latest smartphone or computer-majig), you will be so very happy and fulfilled. Then something else comes along that is slightly better than what you just obtained and now you aren’t happy with what you have.

[The things of this world is like getting a cup with a little hole on the bottom. That happiness eventually leaks out and then you feel empty. You fill it again with other stuff, but it will eventually go empty again. Guess what… the cup that our heavenly Father offers is without a hole on the bottom! He can offer joy that is eternal :D]

It could be like that with many achievements, too. If I get to obtain aΒ  BQ in May, it won’t make my life complete. I’ll be looking for the next challenge (which I feel is okay). But what if I never get a BQ? Will my life fall apart? Will I become depressed and shut down? Nahhh… even that achievement is just a thing that I don’t need it to make my life complete. You see what I’m saying?

Don’t look for the things of this world to make you fulfilled and joyful. It will pretty much be a never-ending hole that will consume you and you’ll just spend your whole life feeling just shy of PURE JOY.

Not to say that you should feel bad for having the latest in technology, for trying to advance in your career, for studying really hard to get the best grades, or for going for a big PR. Just don’t let those things be your “god”.

Have you heard of Flat Stanley?

Ever been to Half Moon Bay?

When was your last confidence-boosting run/workout? What was it?

    • You are so very kind! Yes, I have been so blessed by my wonderful family πŸ™‚
You’re right, it looks like Pebble Beach… there is a golf course there in Half Moon Bay and the 18th hole ends at the Ritz Carlton.

  1. I’ve got to check out Ritz Carlton at Half Moon Bay, too! I had no idea it was so beautiful there. BTW, please send well wishes and congrats to Alex & his beautiful wife. Well, I guess there’s only one thing left for you to do now…. when’s your wedding, Michelle?!! πŸ™‚

  2. What a beautiful family you have! We have been enjoying our time with Flat Stanley too. I have been taking him everywhere and probably taking this way too seriously. I am even making it into a book on Snapfish for our friend. Pretty fun times!
